Do you fancy trying wild camping?

This trip is perfect for the beginner wild camper – we have planned for a short approach walk and will utilise sheltered camp spots. You will be accompanied by experienced leaders who will offer the support you need at every stage, from preparation to pitching your tent!

If you don’t have your own kit, we can organise for you to hire equipment from Gloucestershire Love Her Wild’s kit library for a small fee.

The Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) are beautiful, with a wild and remote feel, even when relatively close to the valley, making this a perfect location for your first wild camping experience.

Trip Overview

Our Brecon Beacons Wild Camping Experience makes the perfect first introduction to wild camping. We will decide the exact location for our hike and camp the week before the trip, to avoid the worst of the Welsh weather, and to seek out sheltered valleys if needed. The total distance for our trip should be around 6 miles (8 miles absolute maximum), which we split equally over the two days (roughly 3 miles on the first evening, and then 3 miles back again the following day).

We always stop regularly to admire the views and rest our legs after any uphill sections. Our camp spot for the night will be chosen based on the weather – either sheltered and tucked away or (fingers crossed!) with a stunning view to enjoy!

This trip is suitable for women with some previous campsite camping experience, who already know how to pitch their tent and feel comfortable lighting their stove and cooking dinner.Because this is a wild camping expedition, there is no access to toilets, and you will need to know how to toilet in the wild for the direction of the trip. Our staff are happy to discuss the best way to do this with you before or during your trip if you need advice. You don’t need to be able to navigate as our staff will do all that for you, although if you’d like to learn, we can give you the opportunity to practice – just ask!

Day 1 –we will meet in a car park in the Brecon Beacons at around 3 pm (the exact time may vary slightly depending on the weather and camp spot chosen). After introductions, your trip leader will conduct a kit check and hand out any equipment you have hired from Gloucestershire Love Her Wild. There will then be time to pack your rucksack.

Then we head into the hills! The walking will be slow-paced, with plenty of time to rest. We know that carrying a pack will be new to most people, so we take that into account when we plan the trip.

The walk to camp should only take about 1-2 hours. Once we have reached our camp spot, we will learn a little about choosing a tent site, and (with support if you need it) we will pitch the tents and make them comfortable for the night. Because we are wild camping, you will need to be comfortable with “wild toileting”, and we will discuss the plans for toileting and designate an appropriate area for you to use when needed. We will also run through how (and where) to filter water.

Then it’s time for dinner! After a briefing on safe stove usage, we will support you (if needed) in lighting and using your stove and get dinner cooking.

After dinner, we will hopefully get the chance to see the sun go down and enjoy an evening amongst the hills. Will we see the stars? Let’s hope so!

Day 2 – we won’t rush too much in the morning, so you’ll have ample time to make coffee and enjoy breakfast before we take the tents down. Then we will conduct a thorough search of the site to ensure we have left no trace of our passing, before setting off for the short walk back to the car park. On our return to the car park, your leader will collect all the hired kit before we say our goodbyes. We should be all finished and ready to depart by midday.

We aim to keep the pace and atmosphere relaxed at all times, giving you ample chance to unwind and really enjoy your first wild camping experience.

“I learned to wild camp when I was a teenager, with frequent trips to the Brecon Beacons, and I’ve returned again and again ever since. I love the empty spaces, beautiful camp spots and incredible views. It’s definitely one of my happy spaces!”
