If you love the coast, sandy beaches and beautiful ocean views, this is the perfect trip for you!
Whilst the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is not as famous as its longer cousin the South West Coast Path, it is just as beautiful. It is wild and remote in places, although you’re never far from civilisation either. The coast is studded with wildflowers, the bird life is incredible, and the views… are to die for! Every section of the coast is slightly different and the path leads you from one amazing vista to another, so you always want to go just a little further to see what’s around the next bend.
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one of the UK’s oldest National Trails. Created in 1970 it also forms part of the much longer Wales Coast Pathand the International Appalachian Trail. At 186 miles long the whole route is an epic undertaking, so we’ve selected a smaller fifty-mile section for our adventure. Long-distance walking is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local area and to take the time to enjoy the landscape as we journey.
Trip Overview
Our route runs from Newgale’s two-mile-long sandy beach to the port of Fishguard, via the ancient harbour at Solva and the historic city of St Davids. We’ve split the trip into six achievable days – each covering between seven to nine miles, leaving us plenty of time to stop and explore the ancient harbours and sandy beaches as we pass. The coast path is quite hilly, but we’ll have the time to pace ourselves on the short but steep uphill sections and rest and enjoy the views after each climb.
Each night we will camp at coastal campsites, many perched right on the cliff tops and blessed with incredible sunset views. All our campsites have hot showers too!
We will carry all our equipment on this adventure, but your trip leader will be on hand before the trip to help and advise you as you choose your kit. There are occasional shops along the route where we can re-stock food.

Itinerary
First evening
On our first evening together we will meet at Newgale Campsite, situated right on the beach. We will enjoy the evening getting to know each other, and maybe taking a stroll along the enormous Newgale sands before watching the sunset over the sea.
Newgale campsite is accessible by bus from Haverfordwest Train station. If you plan to drive to Newgale you will need to organise your own car-parking for the duration of our adventure.
Day 1
Day one is an eight-and-a-half-mile walk from Newgale to Caerfai, along rugged cliffs. We will break our journey halfway to explore the little harbour town of Solva, with its shops and cafes, where there will be a chance to enjoy a cream tea or an ice cream.
Our campsite is just a mile from the city of St Davids, so anybody with energy left after the day’s hiking could walk into town to explore or enjoy a meal in one of the many pubs or restaurants.
Day 2
Day two on the trail sees us starting our 7.5-mile journey around the St Davids Peninsula, to our campsite near Whitesands Bay. Along the way we will pass St Non’s chapel, Porth Clais Harbour (where there is a small cafe and ice cream shack) and the lifeboat station at St Justinian’s. This section of the coast is famous for its wildlife as the Ramsey Island RSPB reserve is just offshore.
Our campsite is perched above a small sandy beach, with views west to catch the sunset.
Day 3
Day three of our journey is eight miles of much wilder coast, as we traverse St Davids Head, with its rocky moorland peaks towering above us. There are no facilities along this remote section of coastline, but we will be amply rewarded with solitude and incredible views.
Our campsite is nestled into a little valley set back from the coast – a real safe haven after the wildness of the day’s hiking.
Day 4
Day four’s hike is eight miles long and takes us past a section of the coast steeped in history. We will pass the old quarries of the Blue Lagoon (now a famous wild swimming spot), before taking a break at the industrial quayside at Porthgain, which has a shop and cafe/chippy.
Our campsite for the night allows campfires, so don’t forget to pack some treats to enjoy as we relax around the flames together.
Day 5
Our journey on day five takes us out onto the start of Strumble Head – another wild section of coastline swept by tidal races. Along our eight-and-a-half-mile route, we will pass the stunning Aber Mawr beach before the cliffs start getting higher and taller as we enter Strumble Head.
Our campsite is slightly inland, tucked behind one of the many rocky outcrops that litter the headland. If you have any energy left the nearby mini-mountain of Garn Fawr has incredible views!
Day 6
Day six is our final (and longest) day, at nine miles. We will traverse another section of wild and remote coast past Strumble Head lighthouse, before following the coast round to Goodwick and Fishguard. This is the end of our walk, and we will enjoy a celebratory drink at the beachside cafe before saying our goodbyes.
Goodwick has a train station (and a ferry to Ireland!) making it the perfect place to end our adventure. There are regular trains and buses back to Haverfordwest (or Newgale), or onwards to the rest of Wales and (eventually) England.

That’s why I’m so excited to be leading this trip, which combines the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast with both hiking and camping – quite literally a hat-trick of my favourite things!”
